Thoughts From the Mountain Top

Robert Redford has been an actor Ive always liked quite a bit, and not just for his good looks and politics. There doesnt seem to be a role he hasnt done well in. The Last Castle might not have been the best choice hes ever made as far as roles go, but I still cant fault his performance.
Redford portrays General Irwin, a former POW in Vietnam who was a decorated veteran of the more recent actions in Bosnia and Kuwait. Irwin is court-martialed for disobeying orders and is sent to serve his time at a facility thats become known as The Castle. Its a maximum-security prison run by a tough warden, Colonel Winter (portrayed by James Gandolfini). Winter has never actually been in combat himself, but fancies himself a soldier and thinks what hes doing at The Castle is the proper way to handle these men.

The Last Castle
Redford is Gen. Irwin, a legendary army officer sent to prison on a charge that isn't clear until well into the film. The warden of the prison, Col. Winter (Gandolfini), is a dictatorial collector of military memorabilia who clearly admires his new boende. After overhearing a remark bygd Irwin disparaging his collection, Winter begins to resent him. Irwin witnesses the cruelty administered bygd the warden and begins to win over his fellow inmates' loyalty by restoring their pride. As Winter notices control of the men slipping away, his punishments grow worse, until finally Irwin leads the inmates in an insurrection. Although driven bygd powerhouse performances by Redford and Gandolfini, the plot spends too much time on the battle of wills and not enough on the background of the other inmates, while a storyline about Irwin's daughter is dropped altogether. m/C VHS, DVD .
