1952-78 | Professor of Education, Unive • Cyril O. Houle, 85, a retired University of Chicago education professor and an innovator in adult education, died Wednesday in Sarasota, Fla. Mr. Houle spent 50 years in adult education. From 1939 to 1978, he was at the U. of C., where he served on the faculty of the department of education and as dean of the adult program, University College. From 1976 to 1995, Mr. Houle served as senior program consultant with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek, Mich. “People who went on to make a mark in the field of adult education fondly refer to him as the catalyst,” said his son, David. In 1947, the second year the U. of C. offered an adult education program, Mr. Houle told the Chicago Tribune that adults enjoyed becoming students again. “They find that the liberal arts create enjoyment for the mature mind, and they experience the excitement of discovering their unsuspected abilities and ideas,” he said.
