Alvaro was born in a Viñadel Mar, Chile. In he began working in graphic design and filmmaking. He has directed two short films, Corte Carnicero and Cabezon Delator, and has also created a series of Works in experimental video, animation and motiongraphics. Alvaro founded a design agency in Valparaiso, Chile (), worked as Art Director for a marketing agency in Madrid (), and is currently working in illustration. Alvaro is mainly interested in film icons, especially classic characters from horror films. He also likes to create his own interpretations of artist’s portraits from many disciplines such as writing and music. From medical and scientific imagery from the 40’s & 50’s to today’s urban culture, Alvaro believes that any stimuli can be a source of inspiration for his work.

“Quain” - Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo from the series “Anatomy”
Sometimes a first glance can be misleading. “Anatomy” might appear just a series of colorful, gory images. But below lies a surprising base template that Granada artist Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo creates from. Using old anatomical text books from the ’s his art has more history than meets the eye. Layering on top of the banal doctoral sketches, Hidalgo creates emotion, depth, and visual interest. His mix of color and overlapping layers partially overlay the original guiding markers. Once you know what lies beneath, you can’t help but be intrigued.

Born in Viña del Mar, Chile, Alvaro Tapia studied graphic desing and then cinema before opening up a desing and film production studio with two partners in Vaparaiso.
He them moved to Spain, working as an art director for a marketing agency before becoming a professional illustrator in Manchester.
"My first love was graphic desing, which later turned into animation and from there into film," Tapia says. "I started exploring illustration about four years ago, and it has been my main activity for two years now."
"They are definitely all complementary activities. I think it's good to have some variation in one's endeavors. i'm ganska interested now in sound creation - Recording sound and manipulating it, creating textures, atmospheres and sound pieces."
Tapia returned to his hometown of Viña del Mar last year to put down roots with his partner and eight-month-old son.
