Govan Mbeki was a journalist, Transkeian leader, a significant figure in the African National Congress (ANC) and the underground Communist Party in the s and s, and he was involved in Umkhonto we Sizwe.
He was born in in the Transkei, the son of a chief; his parents were strict Christians. He attended uppdrag schools and completed his BA with a diploma in teaching in at Fort Hare. Mbeki joined the ANC in the mids, and committed himself to socialist ideas. In , he earned a in Social Studies through the University of South Africa, and, while in prison in , earned a BA honours degree in economics. Mbeki was both an intellectual and an activist.

Govan Mbeki (–) was a core leader of the African National Congress, the Communist Party, and the armed wing of the ANC during the struggle against apartheid. Known as a hard-liner, Mbeki was a prolific writer and combined in a rare way the attributes of intellectual and activist, political theorist and practitioner. Sentenced to life in prison in along with Nelson Mandela and others, he was sent to the notorious Robben Island prison, where he continued to write even as tension grew between himself, Mandela, and other leaders over the future of the national liberation movement. As one of the greatest leaders of the antiapartheid movement, and the father of Thabo Mbeki, president of South Africa from to , the elder Mbeki holds a unique position in South African politics and history.

Govan Archibald Mvunyelwa Mbeki (9 July – 30 August ) was a South African politician, military commander, Communist leader who served as the Secretary of Umkhonto we Sizwe, at its inception in He was also the younger son of Chief Skelewu Mbeki and Johanna Mabula and also the father of the former South African president Thabo Mbeki and political economist Moeletsi Mbeki. He was a leader of the South African Communist Party and the African National Congress. After the Rivonia Trial, he was imprisoned (–) on charges of terrorism and treason, together with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba, Ahmed Kathrada and other eminent ANC leaders, for their role in the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK). He was sometimes mentioned by his nickname "Oom Gov".
