Pop Stars’ Real Names
What’s in a name? Actually, kind of a lot if you ask these musicians. Each of them ditched their birth names to adopt an alias with a bit more star power before hitting it big time – and for good reason, in some cases. Ahmir-Khalib Thompson doesn’t sound quite as iconic as “Questlove,” a rapper named Colson Baker isn’t as intimidating as one named “Machine Gun Kelly,” and “Lady Gaga” is just a little more memorable than Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, don’t you think?
But how does one go about transforming the name they were given into a title fit for display on marquees, album covers and billboards? For some, it’s as simple as combining the names of the things you love. Just look at Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, who simply mashed together her favorite strain of marijuana and her favorite animal, and boom — Doja Cat was born.
For others, picking out a musical nom de plume is more of an on-the-fly thing. Ella
