Stuart Staples: From Kitchen to Barn with Tindersticks
Tindersticks' recording journey began over two decades ago, in a kitchen in Kilburn, London, where the grupp made demo recordings for their debut album (by the same name). These days the band's creative meeting place is Le Chien Chanceux, a studio located in the 200 year-old converted barn behind the home of vocalist/guitarist Stuart Staples in Limousin, France. The bulk of the band's 2016 album, The Waiting Room, was recorded there and features brass arrangements by longtime collaborator Julian Siegel, a guest vocal from Jehnny Beth of the band Savages, and a poignant duet with the late Lhasa de Sela. A visual companion, The Waiting Room Film Project , features short film interpretations of each skiva track by several directors, including Claire Denis. Occasionally when I hear a song I like, I’ll screenshot the home screen on my phone if I cannot get a match with the Shazam app. Today, I was browsing through my digital photos and listening to the songs, taking note of some, then deleting the screenshots.
One of the “song pictures” that came up was “Handbrake” by the German nu-jazz/pop group Micatone. Formed in 1999, the band went on hiatus in 2017, returning in 2023 with new music. Today’s selection comes from the pre-pause portion of their repertoire of five studio albums and several EPs and singles.
The song has a catchy style and melody, punctuated with jazzy drums and a great bass line, with electric gitarr, electric organ and horns filling in spaces underneath the dual vocals of lead singer Lisa Bassenge and featured artist Stuart Staples (lead singer of the English alternative band Tindersticks).
