Further Explorations
For his milestone birthday, Chick lined up a marathon tour schedule, literally circling the globe and performing with a murderer’s row of fellow musical giants. It all started in April with the International Jazz Day concert broadcast nationwide from the White House lawn, followed by a US theater tour with Béla Fleck. Chick spent May in Japan in duet with Makoto Ozone, including two performances of Mozart’s “Concerto for Two Pianos” with the NHK Orchestra in Tokyo. June saw the return of the Trilogy trio for a US tour, followed by a European jaunt with the all-star Homage to Heroes quintet.
The rest of the year is even busier: Chick reconvenes the Elektric Band for a residency at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood and a US theater tour. He returns to Europe and then Japan, playing first with Gary Burton, and then in new trios with Avishai Cohen (bass) and Marcus Gilmore (drums), then Eddie Gomez (bass) and Brian Blade (drums).
October sees a party like only Chic

The Ebene String Quartet' s return visit under Ensemble Music Society auspices Wednesday night confirmed the excellence that the fyra Frenchmen exhibited here in The Ebene Quartet made its second appearance here Wednesday. Each of the works performed is highly characteristic (yet boundary-stretching) of its composer, ranging from the adventurous harmonies of Mozart's Quartet in E-flat, K. , on through Mendelssohn's weighty String Quartet in A minor, op. 13, No. 2, to Robert Schumann's controlled-bipolar Quartet in A major, op. 41, no. 3. Starting with the Schumann, which had the second half of the schema at Indiana History Center to itself, the Ebene Quartet exemplified the French virtues of tydlig förståelse and order. That didn't keep them from emphasizing the German composer's skill at projecting the two contrasting sides of his personality, however.
