Robert Emmet Sherwood, the son of Arthur Murray Sherwood, a rich stockbroker, and his wife, the former Rosina Emmet, was born in New Rochelle on 4th April 1896. He was a great-grandnephew of the Irish nationalist Robert Emmet who was executed for high treason in 1803.
Sherwood's mother had been a student at the Arts Students League before becoming a successful artist whose illustrations had appeared in magazines, including Harper's Weekly and Century Magazine. She also provided the artwork for several children's book.
Rosina had married late in life and did not start a family until she was 33 years old. She had five children: Arthur (1888), Cynthia (1889), Philip (1891), Robert (1896) and Rosamund (1899). Robert Emmet (4 March 1778 – 20 September 1803) was an Irish Republican, orator and rebel leader. Following the suppression of the United Irish uprising in 1798, he sought to organise a renewed attempt to overthrow the British Crown and Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland, and to establish a nationally representative government. Emmet entertained, but ultimately abandoned, hopes of immediate French assistance and of coordination with radical militants in Great Britain. In Ireland, many of the surviving veterans of '98 hesitated to lend their support, and his rising in Dublin in 1803 proved abortive.

Sherwood was a noted American playwright and screenwriter. He was born in New Rochelle, N.Y., graduated from Harvard in 1918, and served in World War I, where he was wounded in combat. He traveled back to America, where he began his career as a movie critic, writing for magazines such as Life and Vanity Fair. He wrote for Vanity Fair as drama editor from 1919 until 192
