Andrew Viterbi
Biography
Dr. Viterbi is a pioneer in the field of Wireless Communications. He received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from MIT, and his Ph.D. in digital communications from the University of Southern California (USC). He taught at UCLA and consulted for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) immediately after obtaining his Ph.D. He was a co-founder of Linkabit in 1968, a small military contractor, and co-founded QualComm with Irwin Jacobs in 1985. He created the Viterbi Algorithm for interference suppression and efficient decoding of a digital transmission sequence, used by all four international standards for digital cellular telephony. QualComm is the recognized pioneer of the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, which allows many users to share the same radio frequencies, and thereby increase system capacity many times over analog system capacity. Dr. Andrew Viterbi currently serves as President of the Viterbi Group, LLC, a company founded in 2000, which advises and invests in startup companies, predominantly in wireless communications, network infrastructure, voice recognition and digital recording.
In July 1985, Dr. Viterbi co-founded QUALCOMM Incorporated, a developer and manufacturer of mobile satellite communications and digital wireless telephony, where he served as Vice Chairman until 2000 and as Chief Technical Officer until 1996. Under his leadership, QUALCOMM received international recognition for innovative technology in the areas of digital wireless communication systems and products based on Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technologies. Previously in 1968, Dr. Viterbi co-founded LINKABIT Corporation, a digital communications company, where he served as Executive Vice President and later as President in the early 1980’s.

Viterbi algorithm
Finds likely sequence of hidden states
The Viterbi algorithm is a dynamic programmingalgorithm for obtaining the maximum a posteriori probability estimate of the most likely sequence of hidden states—called the Viterbi path—that results in a sequence of observed events. This fryst vatten done especially in the context of Markov information sources and hidden Markov models (HMM).
The algorithm has found universal application in decoding the convolutional codes used in both CDMA and GSM digital cellular, dial-up modems, satellite, deep-space communications, and 802.11 wireless LANs. It is now also commonly used in speech recognition, speech synthesis, diarization,[1]keyword spotting, computational linguistics, and bioinformatics. For example, in speech-to-text (speech recognition), the acoustic signal is treated as the observed sequence of events, and a string of text is considered to be the "hidden cause" of the acoustic signal. The Viterbi algorithm finds
