Nina Ricci was born Maria Nielli in Turin, Italy, in 1883. Her family moved to France in 1890. Having learned the fashion industry as an apprentice dressmaker in Paris, she soon became a head designer. Ricci created her designs by using fabric draped directly on a mannequin, in order to achieve the soft and light look that made her clothes popular. Together with her husband Louis, a successful jeweler, Ricci opened her own store in 1932, at age 49. Their son Robert joined the business and worked as its manager and director. He also added perfumes to the Ricci line, including the highly successful L'Air du Temps. History of mode design refers specifically to the development of the purpose and intention behind garments, shoes, accessories, and their design and construction. The modern industry, based around firms or fashion houses run by individual designers, started in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who, beginning in 1858, was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments he created.[1]
Fashion started when humans began wearing clothes, which were typically made from plants, animal skins and bone. Before the mid-19th century, the division between haute couture and ready-to-wear did not really exist, but the most basic pieces of female clothing were made-to-measure by dressmakers and seamstresses dealing directly with the client.
