COLLECTED VERSE Paul Valéry was born in the Mediterranean port town of Sète in 1871, second son of Fanni Grassi (from Trieste) and Barthélemy Valerj (spelling later changed), a Corsican customs inspector. The family moved to nearby Montpellier in 1884 where Valéry attended the lycée before taking a degree in law at the university that now bears his name. From his teenage years, he began publishing verse but following a profound emotional and intellectual crisis in Genoa
